Every antivirus company says it’s the best. The fairest way to cut through that is to look at independent testing labs, which run the same malware and real-world attacks against every product and publish the results. Here’s what they show and how to use that to choose.
The two labs worth knowing
- AV-TEST (Germany) scores products out of 6 in three areas: Protection (does it stop threats?), Performance (does it slow your PC?), and Usability (does it flag safe files by mistake?).
- AV-Comparatives (Austria) runs a “Real-World Protection Test” using live threats and gives awards: ADVANCED+ (top), ADVANCED, and STANDARD.
One detail people miss: false alarms matter. A product that blocks everything but also blocks your safe files can score lower than one with slightly less protection.
How the big names compared in 2026 testing
| Product | AV-Comparatives Real-World (Feb to May 2026) | AV-TEST Windows (June 2026) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitdefender | 99.5% protection, ADVANCED+ | 6 / 6 / 6 | Best all-round protection with low slowdown |
| Norton | 99.3% protection, ADVANCED+ | 6 / 6 / 6 | Families who want identity protection bundled in |
| Microsoft Defender (free) | 99.0% protection, ADVANCED+ | 6 / 5.5 / 6 | Careful single users on a budget |
| ESET | 98.5% protection, ADVANCED | 6 / 6 / 6 | Lightweight, low-fuss protection |
| Malwarebytes | 98.8% protection, STANDARD (more false alarms) | Not in this round | Cleaning up an infected computer; simple interface |
What the results tell us
- The top products are close. The difference between the best paid tools is fractions of a percent. Choose on features, devices, and price, not tiny score gaps.
- Free Microsoft Defender is genuinely good at blocking malware. Paid suites earn their money with extras like scam protection, identity monitoring, and multi-device plans.
- Consistency matters more than one test. Look for products that score well across many test rounds, not just one.
How to choose in 3 questions
- How many devices? Count every computer, phone, and tablet you want covered. Plans are priced by device count.
- Do you want extras? Identity monitoring, a VPN, or a password manager can be cheaper bundled than bought separately. Check what’s included before you buy.
- What’s the renewal price? Most antivirus is discounted the first year and renews higher. Check the renewal price and set a reminder.
Our picks
- Best overall: Bitdefender
- Best for families and identity protection: Norton
- Best lightweight option: ESET
- Best free option: Microsoft Defender, already on your PC
